Lighting rarely fails loudly.
It dims. One fitting goes amber while the two beside it stay white. A driver gives out in a stairwell nobody walks through at night. None of it is dramatic, and all of it ends up on someone's maintenance budget.
The cost is almost never the fitting. It's the access — the lift, the permit, the after-hours crew, the level of the car park you have to close to change six lamps. A fitting that lasts is worth far more than a fitting that was cheap.
You can't see a driver from the showroom floor. That's exactly why it's the first thing we specify.
What's actually inside.
Five components decide whether a light is still doing its job in ten years. Only one of them is the part you can see.
- 1DiffuserControls glare and hides the diodes. Cheap optic, and you see every LED as a dot.
- 2LED boardSurface mount devices on an aluminium core. Binned so colour holds across a production run.
- 3Thermal pathWhere lifespan is actually decided. Heat has to leave the board and reach the housing.

Anyone can quote a lumen figure. These are the things that decide whether it's still true in year ten.
The driver decides the lifespan
Most fittings fail at the driver long before the diodes give up. We specify driver quality first, because that single component is the difference between a light that lasts three years and one that lasts fifteen.
Heat is what kills an LED
Thermal design determines real-world life. Our housings move heat away from the board rather than trap it behind a neat-looking bezel, which is why we care what a fitting is made of, not just what it measures on day one.
Batches have to match
A building lit in stages shouldn't look like it. We hold colour temperature and output consistent across production runs, so a fitting installed next year sits beside one installed today without anybody noticing.
Built for where it has to live
Ceiling voids, plant rooms, open car park decks and full sun are not laboratory conditions. We specify for the environments our fittings actually end up in.

How a fitting gets to site.
Four steps, in order. The first one is where most of the difference is made.

Specify
We decide what goes in the fitting — driver, board, optic, thermal path — before anyone quotes a price.

Sample
Nothing goes into production off a datasheet. We put the sample in a real ceiling and look at it.

Produce
Manufactured to that specification, under our name, with colour and output held across the run.

Supply
Delivered as SMD Lighting product, branded on the fitting and the carton, traceable back to us.
Questions we get asked.
Are you actually Australian owned?
Yes. SMD Lighting Pty Ltd is privately held and 100% Australian owned. There is no offshore parent company setting the specification.
How long have you been going?
Since 2011. The company started as an electrical lighting wholesaler when most of the market was still moving halogen and fluorescent stock, and went early on LED.
What sectors do you supply?
Commercial, industrial and residential. In practice that means offices, car parks, warehousing, retail, education and strata common property.
Can you match an existing installation?
Usually. Send the details of what's already installed — or a photo of the fitting and its label — and we'll tell you honestly whether we can match it or only get close.
What information do you need to quote?
The drawings if you have them, or the room type, ceiling height, mounting method and how many. If you only have some of that, send what you have.
